DIY Cleaning Products | Kid & Environmentally Safe

January 5, 2019 by Sarah Leave a Comment

As I mentioned in the post last week Matt and I did 2012 without plastic. Ever since we’ve been making our own cleaning recipes.

This became more important in our eyes when I was pregnant as well as after Mia was born. I was always so worried about using chemicals on the floor where she would be crawling about or accidentally ingesting them.

Now, I realize even home made cleaning ingredients should also not be ingested but they are much safer.

I have to say it, keep these away from children.

We store most of these in spray bottles. They are plastic but being on one income we couldn’t justify the cost of the aluminum one. Hopefully we’ll be able to upgrade soon.

Without too much of an intro I just want to get straight to it.

Here are our four favourite cleaning products.

Glass cleaner
1c water
1c rubbing alcohol
1Tbs white vinegar

Method:
Mix in spray bottle.
Use with a lint free cloth. Depending on cloth you may need to use another one that’s dry to dry off the glass/mirror.
*You can use paper towel but I’m all about reusables.

All purpose cleaner
3 cups hot water
1cup white vinegar
1/4 tsp liquid Castile soap (we use Dr. Bronner’s)
Optional: 10ish drops of essential oil We use lavender & tea tree

Method:
Mix in bowl to help melt and disperse ingredients then pour into spray bottle.
Use with any cleaning cloth you prefer.
Gently swirl before each use. If you shake too much it’ll just get foamy.

Bathroom & Kitchen scrub
Make a paste with baking soda and dish soap. Use a cloth of your choice and make sure to rinse afterwards. If you don’t rinse you’ll get a baking soda film.

This is great on bathroom tiles, tubs, sinks etc.

Toilet bowl cleaner
I sprinkle baking soda along the walls of the the toilet and use the toilet bowl scrubber.

I am a labeler so I decided to add a FREE PRINTABLE LABEL for the glass & all purpose cleaners. The other two I make on the fly and don’t need a bottle. (click here)
